Sanders: DNC vetoed union leader pick for platform committee

Source: Washington Post

SPRECKELS, Calif. — When the Democratic National Committee announced that Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont would get to pick five of the 15 people who'll write the party platform, it was seen as a small coup. But at a news conference today, Sanders revealed that the DNC had actually vetoed his nomination of a key labor ally, and said he was told not to pick anyone else from the labor movement.

Hillary Clinton’s Energy Initiative Pressed Countries to Embrace Fracking, New Emails Reveal

Source: The Intercept

Back in April, just before the New York primary, Hillary Clinton’s campaign aired a commercial on upstate television stations touting her work as secretary of state forcing “China, India, some of the world’s worst polluters” to make “real change.” She promised to “stand firm with New Yorkers opposing fracking, giving communities the right to say ‘no’.”

The television spot, which was not announced and does not appear on the official campaign YouTube page with most of Clinton’s other ads, implied a history of opposition to fracking, here and abroad. But emails obtained by The Intercept from the Department of State reveal new details of behind-the-scenes efforts by Clinton and her close aides to export American-style hydraulic fracturing — the horizontal drilling technique best known as fracking — to countries all over the world.

Senate report on CIA torture is one step closer to disappearing

Source: Yahoo News

The CIA inspector general’s office — the spy agency’s internal watchdog — has acknowledged it “mistakenly” destroyed its only copy of a mammoth Senate torture report at the same time lawyers for the Justice Department were assuring a federal judge that copies of the document were being preserved, Yahoo News has learned.

Press Release from the Nevada Bernie grassroots group about the disasterous Convention

I was a Bernie State delegate at the convention Saturday. Many things reported here and again throughout the est. press are so lacking of accuracy. Here is a press release from the Nevada Bernie Grassroots: ALLEGATIONS OF GROSS CORRUPTION NEARLY CAUSE A RIOT AT THE NEVADA STATE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION

Las Vegas, NV – The day after a Nevada judge ruled that there was no cause for a court to interfere in the affairs of the Nevada State Democratic Party, State Party Chair Roberta Lange had to flee the State Democratic Convention after her mismanagement of the convention caused a near riot.

Delegates from the convention reported instances in which Lange repeatedly ignored petitions, motions from the floor, and even appeared to rule against the clear majority in multiple voice votes, leading to a convention full of enraged and shocked delegates.

The trouble began when Lange opened the convention and moved to approve her own self-written temporary rules of order, which had been the subject of some controversy. Although video suggests that the voice vote to approve the rules was overwhelmingly against, she nonetheless called the motion as passed, inciting the first disruption of the convention. Later, although Sanders delegates were able to raise multiple petitions with double the amount required signatures to bring motions to the floor, Lange refused to hear the motions, causing more frustration among Sanders supporters.

In addition, party members of the credentials committee pulled the credentials of sixty-four Sanders delegates, refusing to hold hearings on their delegate status, which is an otherwise normal procedure at any democratic convention. These delegates were previously registered as democrats and served as county delegates (a requirement to participate at the state level), but for some unknown reason their status as registered democrats had changed or was unclear, and they were never given a chance to reconcile the situation.

Per democratic convention procedure, a Minority Report was produced by credentials committee member Leslie Sexton to formally disagree with the credentials report and inform the room of the sixty-four delegate credentials in question. Roberta Lange refused to allow Sexton to announce the Minority Report to the convention attendees. It wasn’t until DNC member Andres Ramirez, who, as a member of the party committee is allowed to speak on the microphone, stole the microphone from Lange and declared his right to announce the Minority Report, and deferred to Sexton to read the report.

After 12+ hours of convention voting, patient Sanders supporters waited for the appropriate step in the convention process per rules and bylaws to motion for a recount by headcount, after the Party did not bring the count up for approval via vote. The motion was ignored with Lange claiming she couldn’t hear the motion coming from the floor. Frustrated by several attempts to motion that were ignored or unheard by Lange and the committee, Bernie grassroots leader Angie Morelli responded to her claim by using a megaphone to announce the motion for a headcount. Lange responded by requesting security to confiscate the megaphone, who then threatened to have her permanently 86’d from all Caesar’s properties for use of the megaphone. Further attempts to motion for a headcount, or any other motion, were not acknowledged by Lange.

The most shocking moment of the night came when Congressional Candidate Jesse Sbaih, while giving a stump speech from the stage, used his allotted time to motion for a headcount vote. The crowd erupted in cheers, while Vice Chair Chris Wicker appeared to panic. Rather than request a 2nd to the motion and hold the headcount vote, the party leadership conferred. Lange then ran to the podium and motioned for the convention to be adjourned. With remaining Sanders supporters vastly outnumbering Hillary supporters at around 11:00pm, the voice vote against the motion to adjourn by Sanders supporters was overwhelmingly against the motion. Lange again refused to acknowledge the correct voice vote results and declared her motion to adjourn to have passed. She immediately fled the stage, and moments later police flooded the convention floor to remove remaining convention attendees.

In the week leading up to the convention, the state party had been defending against allegations that they had manipulated the rules to prevent the Sanders majority from taking control of the party leadership by blocking Sanders nominees to Party leadership positions. The party dismissed the allegations as the rantings of “disgruntled activists”

However, the allegations took on a new light after a convention that could best be described as a disgrace. Lange’s repeated steamrolling of convention procedure and disregard for the spirit of democracy have effectively killed any chance of party unity or inclusion.
